I picked up a nail in the Camry the other day so I ran to the local tire shop over lunch to have it plugged and I had this thought:

If I were a tire shop owner, every time I had someone come in with a nail/screw/etc., I’d take it out, plug the tire, then throw the nail in a coffee can and keep that can in my vehicle. Then as I’m driving around town I’d occasionally chuck one or two out the window and hopefully drum up some business.

Don’t forget to deduct the cost of the car and gas on your taxes - that’s ‘marketing expense’!

it’s cute that you state this as a hypothetical plan as if it isn’t happening

I usually go to Discount Tire and they fix those for free so.... maybe not the best plan, though it does bring the customers in for a possible upsell on new tires I guess

This is exactly how some road repair crews stay busy. Ever thought about how they get the asphalt off of their tools? Heavy duty solvent. A shovel-full of that solvent applied to the pavement will lead to a pothole.

This was relayed to me by a guy who used to work for the local DOT.

One of the local tire chains keep a big clear jar on the front counter where they put all the debris they pull out of flat tires. They use it as selling tool to convince people to by road hazard protection on their new tires.

At some point the bucket of debris has to get emptied....

My brother got a screwdriver in his tire one time. The handle was missing but the rest of it went through the tread.
